INVESTING IN THE EDUCATION OF MIGRANT CHILDREN

Christopher Joseph aka ChrisJay of 98.1 FM and Avonelle Hector Joseph, Founder of ITNAC, flash a thumbs up after the successful installation of the smart board in the learning space for migrant children at ITNAC’s The Love Centre.

FRIDAY MARCH 24, 2023: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO - Learning just got a little more fun with the installation of an interactive smart board at The Love Centre, an educational centre for migrant children managed by the NGO, Is There Not A Cause (ITNAC). The Love Centre is a space created exclusively for migrants living in communities in Trinidad and Tobago, providing assistance in the form of counselling, food, clothes, job referrals and medical support. The Centre also houses a learning space that assists over 100 Spanish-speaking children. The smart board, in the words of ITNAC Founder Avonelle Hector Joseph, "will be making a difference, one life at a time, by creating a safe space for migrant children to learn.”

(L-R) Diana Mathura, Project Officer, Digicel Foundation; Christopher Joseph aka ChrisJay of 98.1 FM; Avonelle Hector Joseph, Founder of ITNAC; and Misha Jackman, Finance Accountant, Digicel Foundation engaged in discussion on the use of the smart board in the learning space for migrant children at ITNAC’s The Love Centre.

The purchase and installation of the smart board was made possible through the Digicel Foundation’s Media transformation grant. Last year, The Foundation issued a call for grant applications from media personalities, journalists and social media influencers to implement projects that could transform communities. Christopher Joseph, aka ChrisJay of 98.1 FM, was one of five media personnel who received a TT$20,000 media transformation grant to invest in the project of his choice – resourcing ITNAC’s learning centre for migrant children.

Children from the migrant community show excitement about learning as their teacher demonstrates a lesson using the new smart board installed by the Digicel Foundation in the learning space at ITNAC’s The Love Centre.

With the new smart board, ITNAC’s teachers at the Love Centre can create more dynamic lessons that suit various learning styles, and use educational software and multimedia content such as videos, webpages, presentations and images.  Research indicates that smart board technology is helping boost classroom engagement with young learners, who belong to a generation of digital natives. For the Love Centre and ITNAC, this digital integration in the classroom can help children learn English and can offer the opportunity for a virtual introduction to local cultural experiences, helping the social integration of migrant communities in Trinidad and Tobago while ensuring that migrant children receive a traditional education.
