YOUNG CREATIVES PRODUCE SHORT FILM ABOUT LOVE 〰️

The engaged audience enjoyed the screening of ‘Love is de Ting’ where young artists got the ability to show their own stories about love in all its embodiments during The Digicel Foundation OJO Youth Talent Incubator Project at the Big Black Box on April 1

TUESDAY APRIL 11, 2023: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO - Thirteen talented youngsters from across Trinidad and Tobago have written, produced and performed in their own short film entitled ‘Love is de Ting’. The aspiring creatives participated in the Digicel Foundation OJO Youth Talent Incubator - a 6-week theatre arts workshop that allowed them to imagine and express themselves in artistic ways.

To round off an exceptional experience, the workshop culminated in a public screening of their film ‘Love is de Ting’, alongside a showcase of independent international films on Saturday 1 April at the Big Black Box on Murray Street in Woodbrook.

The Youth Talent Incubator Project emerged from the Digicel Foundation’s call last year to media professionals to apply for a Media Transformation Grant of TTD $20,000 to implement projects that transform communities. Abeo Jackson and the 96.1FM ‘OJO Breakfast Party’ team, consisting of Terrin ‘Jaiga’ Callender, Rodell ‘Ro'dey’ Cumberbatch, Cleveland ‘Raw Fusion’ Davis, and past team member Nikki Crosby, all experienced creatives of different disciplines, were successful in their application for the funding which they used to conduct the workshop for youth from their urban listenership.

Abeo Jackson shared that the young artists wanted to write their own stories about love in all its embodiments - as feeling, as infatuation, as a change agent, as respect, as empathy, as equity and equality, as self-love, as a weaponized tool, as joy and as healing. “I was overjoyed to facilitate and guide their process. I saw their immense growth both as artists and as human beings. I saw the possibilities for a changed space if we allow young people to lead us. It is my hope that this process of healing and intervention through creative expression stays with them and become a part of their creative and living tool kit for the rest of their lives.”

Laura Dowrich Phillips, Digicel Foundation Board Director, who presented certificates of participation to the 13 persons in the incubator, echoed Abeo Jackson’s sentiments following the screening of ‘Love is de Ting’. She remarked that “Watching the young people tell their stories on film, seeing their vulnerability, hearing their talents was very emotional for me. My sincere hope is that the participants continue to explore their creativity as an outlet and path to living their best lives.”

The audience appeared fully engrossed during the screening of ‘Love is de Ting’ at the Big Black Box on April 1.
