FYZABAD RESIDENTS CELEBRATE COMPLETED UPGRADES TO RECREATIONAL GROUNDS

Young men from the community participate in a football fete match which formed part of celebrations for the unveiling of upgrades to the Delhi Road Recreational Grounds.

MONDAY JANUARY 30, 2023: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO- Fyzo Starzzz Football Club stepped up for their community of Fyzabad last year and applied for a Digicel Foundation EPIC grant to upgrade the Delhi Road Recreational Grounds. A grant of TT$100,000 was approved by the Foundation and the group was happy to finally unveil the completed upgrades to the recreational space at the end of last year. A football fete match was also hosted as part of the celebrations.

The upgrades to the facility included cleaning and painting of the pavilion, repairs to hand bars, repairs and upgrades to locker rooms, storage for team equipment and gear, development of the public bathrooms facilities, team showers, repainting lines and poles of both basketball court and netball court, repair of bleachers and filling the field. President of the Fyzo Starzzz- Andre Roberts said, “We’ve wanted to do this for years.  There is still more to do, but this is definitely a great start.” He reinforced, “It’s not for us at Fyzo Starzzz but the whole community of Fyzabad to enjoy.”

Some of the youth from the Fyzabad community socialise in the freshly painted, clean pavilion space at Delhi Road Recreational Grounds.

The recreational grounds or ‘D Gallows’ as it is affectionately called by members of the community is an activity hub to the Fyzabad community with sporting teams, churches and families frequently using the space. Kaielle Elliot from Project X Sporting Club shared that he was very happy to see the upgrades since the previous condition of the field had prevented him from training and building his skills as a sportsman. He said, “Now I can come out and feel comfident that I won’t injure myself using the facility. I’m happy that my team and others can come out and play matches here.”

Digicel Foundation Director- Guy Small was present at the opening and reminisced of his youth days playing sport. He said, “Sport is an integral part of development.  Playing at different stages is how it starts and to have access to the amenities in your community is exactly what our youth and communities need.” He concluded, “This is a great project for the community by the community.”

President of the Fyzo Starzzz- Andre Roberts was proud to be on hand to welcome the community of Fyzabad to the upgraded community space.
