IGT’S CODING AND ROBOTICS CAMP EDUCATING CHILDREN AT NEW LEVELS

The IGT Coding and Robotics Rock! Camp continues in high gear from August 15 to August 26 with a new set of students from Credo Sophia House and Cotton Tree Foundation, who are eager to learn and have fun. These students will receive introductory training in Coding and Robotics under the theme “Youth Coding for a Sustainable Caribbean.” The IGT Coding and Robotics Rock! Camp is being held in six Caribbean countries – Barbados, Jamaica, St. Kitts, Antigua, St. Maarten, and Trinidad & Tobago.

Commencing in 2021, with the introductory level, participants of IGT’s After School Advantage (ASA) centres across the Caribbean learned the basics of computer programming, website development and, of course, robotics.

This year, the returning ASA students were exposed to a more advanced level of coding and robotics in web development; HTML, CSS and JavaScript; with an introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) during the period July 20 to July 29.

“The goal here is to bridge the digital divide by focusing on children who would not normally be exposed to this kind of learning,” explained Brendan Hames, IGT’s Regional Director for the Caribbean, during his visit to Cotton Tree Foundation, whose participants joined their regional compatriots.

Hames took the time to engage and speak with the participants ages 11 to 16, who all expressed their excitement for the next level. He commented, “Children are naturally curious, so this camp shows the importance of exposing them at an early age to information that they might not otherwise encounter.”

Hames also expressed, “It was very encouraging to see the level of interest these youngsters had. This camp gives them a solid foundation for any future challenges they might face.”

Ms. Sita Persad, Executive Director at the Cotton Tree Foundation, shared similar sentiments. “We are excited to see the level of engagement and interest that our children have in the Camp. They were particularly intrigued by the AI component.”

One of the CTF directors, Ms. Francesca Hawkins also shared, “Our young people at CTF are passionate about AI, robotics, and coding.” She added, “The expert tutors both on site and online are able to deliver a curriculum that is both exciting and in demand. These skills are critical for the development of our students at CTF.”
