TUESDAY JANUARY 10, 2023: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO- Residents from the six Regional Corporations that were severely affected by the recent floods ended 2022 with some much needed relief as a result of a partnership between the Digicel Foundation and Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government. With an investment of TT$127,500 the Digicel Foundation was able to contribute 675 food hampers toward the partnership.

A total of 500 basic food hampers were supplied and distributed across the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation, the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation, and the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation. Additionally, a total of 175, large food hampers were distributed to the residents of Penal and Debe affected by the continuous flooding. In the heights of the Christmas rush and preparations, members of the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government team, Regional Corporations and the Digicel Foundation took the time to visit all the affected corporations.

125 Massy Hampers were distributed to residents from Penal/Debe.

The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government spearheaded by the Honourable Minister, Faris Al-Rawi pooled together resources from various Corporations for intensive clean up, in an effort to restore the Bamboo Community and other affected areas.

Chairman of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation, Mr Kwasi Robinson shared that every two days approximately 150 truck-loads of materials was removed from in or in front of homes and transported to landfills. Councillor for the area, Mrs Seema Ramsaran-Augustine described the recent flooding as the worst she has seen as some areas were surrounded by up to ten feet of water. She said, “More than 250 families have been severely affected, some losing everything. These hampers will go a long way as many have not been able to return to work.”
