SOTT ATHLETES EARN 20 MEDALS AT THE WORLD GAMES

WEDNESDAY, 28 JUNE 2023: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – In the early hours of June 27th, the Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago (SOTT) Delegation returned home after an outstanding performance at the Special Olympics International 2023 World Summer Games held in Berlin from 17 - 25 June. National SOTT athletes participated in 3 disciplines – athletics, power-lifting and swimming – and competed in a total of 42 events at the Games, returning home with an impressive haul of 7 gold, 5 silver, and 8 bronze medals, as well as 13 ribbons for special achievements.

The Honourable Shamfa Cudjoe, Minister of Sport and Community Development, was present to welcome and congratulate the Delegation in the VIP Lounge at Piarco Airport, after which the athletes exited the airport to the rousing cheers of excited family and fans waiting outside.

The Ministry of Sport and Community Development and the SOTT’s longtime corporate sponsor The Digicel Foundation both funded the SOTT Delegation’s travel to Berlin for the Games. Alongside the athletes, the Delegation included 8 coaches, 2 officials, 1 medical staff and 1 media staff.

The Digicel Foundation’s investment in SOTT for this year amounts to TT$330,000, which includes support for the SOTT National Games held in May 2023 and the year-round operations of the SOTT Secretariat at Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

Before the official start of the Berlin Games, the Delegation participated in a Host Town Programme, where the athletes were able to train and acclimatise to their new environment and participate in the exchange of cultures. The SOTT’s mission goes beyond sporting achievements and strives to provide opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities to build life skills and independence. SOTT’s year-round sports training and athletic competitions seek to change attitudes and build better communities for people with intellectual disabilities living in Trinidad and Tobago.
