UNILEVER MEETS LOCAL CONSUMER NEEDS

The Dove Amplified product line for textured hair is one of several inclusive product innovations launched recently by Unilever for Trinidad and Tobago consumers.

Thursday 12 October, 2023, Port of Spain – Local consumers from Trinidad and Tobago are amongst the billions with melanin-rich skin and textured hair who stand to benefit from Unilever’s innovative new product lines. The company’s global R&D centres have been combining industry-leading understanding of melanin-rich skin with insights from dermatologists and consumers to enhance its popular brands.

“Unilever brands continue to lead and shape the local market,” said Jean-Marc Mouttet, Managing Director of Unilever Caribbean Limited. “Last year we launched new lines in the Dove brand, including the Dove Amplify hair care and styling range designed for textured hair types. And we also have a host of new premium, science-led additions to the Vaseline brand portfolio created by dermatologists who specialise in caring for and treating skin of colour. These products address the needs and concerns of Black and Brown skin, such as moisture imbalance, dark spots and uneven skin tone.”

In-house hair stylists at Unilever’s Polycultural Centre of Excellence (PCOE) in the USA try new products for textured hair as part of Unilever’s R&D process.

As part of the global Unilever Group, Unilever Caribbean Ltd benefits from a worldwide ecosystem that brings the best thinking and ideas from anywhere in the world into global R&D centres. Unilever’s R&D Campus in Trumbull, Connecticut hosts 400 scientists, state-of-the-art laboratories, a pilot plant to put new ideas to the test, and an in-house hair salon with full-time stylists working with around 50 participants a week trying new products.

It’s also home to Unilever’s Polycultural Centre of Excellence (PCOE) that brings together a team from different R&D functions, including formulation, consumer technical insights, and science & technology, to work as part of the ‘Melanin Science Movement’ (MSM), a programme designed by Unilever to further develop the understanding of melanin and how it affects the skin.

This work and research ensure that Unilever’s brands continue to address any unmet needs in the beauty, wellbeing and personal care space.

Unilever’s scientists conduct global R&D for skincare and haircare products to develop more inclusive brands, including SheaMoisture, Vaseline and Dove.
