FRIDAY MARCH 10, 2023: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO- In commemoration of International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 08, the Digicel Foundation partnered with the National Commission for Self Help to sponsor 35 Samsung Galaxy A7 tablets for vulnerable women in need. The beneficiaries of the tablets, which are valued at TT$48,825, were identified through the Commission for Self Help’s database. The devices will be distributed to single mothers in Tobago in collaboration with the NGO Women of Substance, which provides support for survivors of domestic violence and abuse. The beneficiaries will also receive one-year free broadband service from Digicel Plus.

The Honourable Minister, Shamfa Cudjoe accepted the donation on behalf of the Ministry of Sport and Community Development, the Ministry responsible for The National Commission for Self Help. The recipients of the devices are now equipped with digital tools to foster independence and entrepreneurism, further enabling them to be active agents in the economic life of the nation.

Minister Cudjoe celebrated the joint effort between her Ministry and the Digicel Foundation to address this year’s UN International Women’s Day theme of ‘DigitAll: Innovation and technology for gender equality’. She commended the Digicel Foundation for its ongoing ‘Extraordinary Project Impacting Communities’ (EPIC) programme, which she stated, “…has gone above and beyond the call of duty to meet the needs of not only community groups in rural areas but all those who have been doing good work, going the extra mile to ensure that assistance is given in terms of proposal writing and funding for worthy projects.”

Digicel Foundation continues to celebrate IWD later this month by partnering with the ‘I Am Laventille Foundation’, which will host its #IWD2023 workshop on March 18. The women and girls in attendance will be gifted with must-have feminine products and masks, courtesy of Digicel and the Digicel Foundation staff. Minster Cudjoe also graciously added a hamper to the collected items.
