CREDO SOPHIA HOUSE RECEIVES TECHNOLOGY BOOST THROUGH THE IGT ASA PROGRAMME
FRIDAY, 29 OCTOBER 2021: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO: Credo Sophia House is now the most recent recipient and partner of the IGT After School Advantage (ASA) programme.
Through its global ASA programme, IGT fully equipped the computer room at Credo Sophia House with desktop computers, headsets, webcams, a printer and tablet.
IGT’s ASA Programme provides computer labs and equipment for disadvantaged children, ages 5-18 to use for homework and online learning during the critical after-school hours. The programme aims to satisfy the need for access to computers and the digital world for children who would not otherwise have this opportunity.
CREDO Foundation helps the most vulnerable and marginalised in society, currently providing accommodation for 32 young people. The youth are housed at two of the foundation’s Residential Development Centres for socially displaced youth at Credo Drop-In and Development Centre for Boys, and Credo Sophia House, an empowerment centre for young girls at risk. Currently, there are 16 female residents between the ages 10-18 at Credo Sophia House.
Chairperson Sr. Roberta O'Flaherty explained, “The aim of the centres is to get the young people away from the streets and other abusive situations and to provide them with the various personal, social and educational skills they need to become productive citizens and responsible adults in the future.”
Expressing her gratitude to IGT for their donation was Administrator for Credo Sophia House Ms. Dale Bartholomew who said, “This equipment will help the girls keep up more easily with their online classes. The closure of schools has had a significant impact on children’s learning, and getting familiar with technology is now essential for effective education.”
IGT Trinidad and Tobago Deputy Country Manager Dexter W. Thomas said, “Once we learned about the great work Credo Sophia House was doing, we knew that IGT and Sophia House shared the same ideals of being collobrative which stood out as one of its core values. The IGT ASA Programme forms part of IGT’s guiding principles which focuses on education, youth and technology and assists in bridging the digital divide. We’re very happy to provide these technology and learning resources to CREDO Sophia House as part of our ASA programme, and we hope to continue working with them far into the future.”
Credo Sophia House is part of the CREDO Foundation for Justice, which was founded in 1997. CREDO is a non-profit, Non-Governmental Organisation affiliated with the Holy Faith Sisters in collaboration with other stakeholders.
