Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – 13 May 2026 – The 2026 Special Olympics National Games are officially underway across Trinidad and Tobago, with events every weekend until the 13th June. Our special athletes compete not just for medals, but for the sheer, defiant joy of showing the world what they can do. The public is encouraged to come out and cheer them on over the coming weeks.
These Games are made possible in part through the continued support of the Digicel Foundation. “The Digicel Foundation continues to support because we see the passion that goes into this, and because of what it represents for our national sports landscape,” said Penny Gomez, CEO of the Digicel Foundation at the Opening Ceremony held at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella. “The stars of these Games will go on to represent Trinidad and Tobago on the world stage at the Special Olympics World Games, and the Digicel Foundation is proud to continue to be at their side.”
As the Equestrian events take centre stage this weekend on Sunday, 17 May, the Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago community will pause to honour the life and legacy of the late Inspector Errol Grant, who served the equestrian programme at the Police Mounted Branch for over a decade. The Equestrian Games will be both a sporting competition and a moment of remembrance for his tireless, behind-the-scenes stewardship in this beloved discipline.
The 2026 Games are also making history. For the very first time, Golf will be hosted in Tobago, on May 25 at the Magdalena Grand Golf Course, marking a significant expansion of the National Games and cementing Tobago’s growing role in the national Special Olympics movement.
The full calendar of events continues with Tobago hosting competitions in bocce, football, and athletics on May 28 at Shaw Park, before the Games culminate in Trinidad on June 13 with Swimming at the Diego Martin Swimming Pool, Basketball, and Football. The Closing Ceremony will follow at 5:30 p.m. at the International School of Port of Spain, where athletes will be celebrated and the cauldron lit to close out an extraordinary chapter.
All SOTT events are free, family-friendly, and genuinely inspiring. Spectator support makes a real difference to every athlete who steps onto that field.
