Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago — September 28, 2026 – Brightstar Lottery (“Brightstar”), through its flagship After School Advantage (ASA) Programme, has opened its 19th ASA digital learning centre in Trinidad at The Living Water Community’s children’s home, Our Lady of the Wayside. The digital learning centre gives the children at the Home access to technology to strengthen their learning and explore interests beyond the classroom in a safe and supportive environment.
“What really stood out to us about Our Lady of the Wayside is its commitment to giving children who have experienced difficult circumstances a safe and stable place to call home,” said Dexter W. Thomas, Brightstar General Manager, Trinidad and Tobago. “We wanted to build on that by giving them the necessary digital tools to support their learning. Through Brightstar’s ASA Programme, we help young people gain access to technology and learning opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach, to give every child the chance to develop the skills and confidence to navigate the future.”
During the August vacation, immediately after installation, the children used their new desktops and printer to complete a gardening project they called “From Our Garden to Our Stomachs.”
“Our children were able to spend time researching and then actually put what they learned into practice,” said Kathleen Pierre Holder, Our Lady of the Wayside Manager. “They learnt how much water and sun each plant needed, how to deal with pests, and looked up recipes for making chocolate mint tea from the ingredients in their garden. Being able to research something and then see how that information works in real life is going to be very beneficial for them.”
“This is the education of the day,” said Jenni Jennings, The Living Water Community Ministry Director. “It is not just about giving the children information. It is about teaching them how to find the information, use it, and then apply it in the real world. This is how we ‘teach them to fish’."
The experience reflects the broader purpose of Brightstar’s ASA Programme, which provides young people across the Caribbean with access to technology and learning opportunities through digital learning centres. The programme is designed not only to help young people access information, but to build the digital skills, confidence and problem-solving abilities they need to apply what they learn.Thomas added that Brightstar’s commitment to the Home extends beyond the initial donation. “We’re making you a promise. We will be back,” Thomas told the children during his visit to the Home. “We’ll continue to give you the technology support you need, and we can’t wait to come back and try that chocolate mint tea on our next visit.”
